About the cave construction and maintenance

The entire cave was man-made, with major construction taking over 14 months and follow-up fine tuning taking a further 4 months. The caves are made up of two caves, linked by tunnels.

The "glow-worm cave" is 32 meters from end to end and 4.5 m at its widest point. The "presentation cave" is 6 x 6 m2. Around 700 cubic meters of concrete went into the cave structure.

Habitat Requirements

Glow-worms require permanently moist habitat for their survival and are therefore dependant on rainforests and wet caves for their continued survival. However, rainforest habitat in Australia is shrinking due to climate change and human impacts. The glow-worm cave provides perfect conditions for glow-worms within a controlled environment, therefore, decreasing negative impacts on our local rainforests.

Method of Construction

An initial model was designed and cave construction followed. Not everything went to plan during construction... especially the weather! The site experienced a large amount of flooding during the summer months. The cave is entirely made from concrete, with everything being modelled on natural limestone caves. The effect is simply stunning!
